What is LASIK?
LASIK (Laser Assisted Intrastromal Keratomileusis) is a relatively painless and short procedure used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The LASIK process involves a reshaping of the cornea, which allows light to be properly focused into the eye and onto the retina. The end result is clearer vision with reduced dependency on eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Who can benefit from LASIK?
If you presently wear glasses or contact lenses, are over the age of 21, and have a stable prescription, laser vision correction may be right for you.

How is LASIK performed?
Before the procedure, anesthetic and antibacterial drops are placed on the eye. Next, the eyelids are retracted to prevent blinking during the procedure. A microkeratome is then used to cut a small flap in the cornea. A computer-controlled laser uses a cool beam of light to precisely reshape a thin layer of the cornea to improve focus. Each laser pulse removes less tissue than the width of a human hair. Once properly shaped, the flap in the cornea is then folded back over the eye and the procedure is done. No sutures are required. The entire LASIK process takes approximately ten minutes per eye.

Results
Clear vision is usually achieved almost immediately. Many patients report improved vision just minutes after the procedure is completed.

What Are The Risks?
As with any surgical procedure, there are risks involved. The good news is that complications due to LASIK are very rare. The risk of a serious vision-threatening complication is less than 1% and no cases of blindness have been reported.

Find Out If You're Ready For LASIK
The Doctors at Kirman Eye work closely with surgeons in the Harrisburg and Philadelphia areas to provide laser vision correction co-management to our patients. We will determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK and thoroughly discuss every aspect of the procedure, including risks and benefits. And we are happy to answer all of your questions. Call us today and schedule your appointment for a LASIK evaluation.
