Optomap Retinal Exam

Retinal Exam

We are pleased to inform you that during your next visit to Kirman Eye, you may choose to experience the benefits of the latest technology in eye exams – the Optomap™ Retinal Exam. The optomap® retinal image gives the Kirman Eye professionals a much larger view (200 degrees) of the back of the eye – your retina – than conventional eye exam equipment. The images can be taken without dilating your pupils – a very common procedure which is uncomfortable and inconvenient for many people.

whatsnewphoto2a Each optomap® image is as individual as fingerprints or DNA and can provide eye care professionals with a unique view of your health very quickly and comfortably. The optomap® image is captured in less than one second and is immediately available for you and your doctor to review.

The optomap® retinal image offers many advantages including:

  • An ultra-wide field view of the retina
  • Comfortable and quick image capture
  • Non-invasive
  • Helps you understand your eye health
  • Provides permanent records for future comparison
  • The optomap® technology does not require pupil dilation, however the decision to dilate or not is a medical decision to be made by your health care professional
  • Patient can resume normal activities immediately

Optos's commitment to Children

Optos is committed to educating parents on the importance of having their children’s eyes checked regularly. This commitment to children stems from their origin – Optos’ revolutionary optomap® Retinal Exam is the brainchild of Douglas Anderson, founder of Optos whose son lost sight in one eye at the age of five due to an undetected retinal detachment. After this tragedy, Mr Anderson set out to develop a system that not only could capture an unprecedented view of the retina (200 degrees), but that was also patient-friendly, particularly for children, who tend to be more difficult to examine.

Regular monitoring of the retina (back of the eyes) can detect serious eye conditions. If left untreated, many of these can ultimately cause blindness. Unfortunately this is what happened to Douglas Anderson’s son.

We all want to protect our eyesight and overall health for ourselves and our family - that is why annual eye exams are important. Regular eye care and exams can protect and prevent many eye diseases, if detected early. Today, a whole range of eye problems can be treated successfully without total vision loss. In addition, many vision problems begin at an early age, so it's important for children to receive proper eye care from the time they are infants.
